This has been an exciting project, my good friend who is a tree feller found this old growth Redwood tree, it had been on the forest floor for 65 years. He brought me some pieces cut to order and this is the result. I had some pieces torrefied by Hans at Tempered Tonewoods which I used for the back and sides. Bending was a challenge!! I've always wanted to make a guitar from Redwood and using wood that grew just minutes from my shop was incredible!! I do not know why this tree was cut but never removed from the forest but I'm really happy my friend turned me onto it!! Softwood on a steel string guitar is something I've been excited about since I saw a Spruce guitar made by luthier Richard Schneider. He made a classical guitar using spruce for the back and sides and it sounded killer. This Model R sounds amazing, it has the full range, has my classic tone, is loud and full with an amazing warmth and accessibility and light touch. I would love to own this guitar!! One of my favorite things is how lightweight the instrument is, I've always loved lightweight guitars, pottery and glass, it feels somehow dangerous to touch but you can play this guitar like any other, just don't drop it....PLEASE!! More of these to come! Photos by Paul Schraub
